Stuttering treatment (Dysfluency) (stuttering and stammering)
at the Huddersfield and Manchester Hypnotherapy Clinic
Stuttering and stammering (also sometimes referred to as dysfluency)
is a symptom of social
phobia (social anxiety) and is four times more common in males than females.
It is thought that around 25% of all children at some point will
go through a stage of development where they stutter. As children
get older the prevalence drops to about 1% in primary and secondary
schools and to about 0.1% for adults.
Stuttering is a behaviour that usually involves repeating sounds,
syllables or words, prolonging some sounds, vocal hesitation and
avoidance or substitution of some words. In some people secondary
effects occur, such as an exaggerated facial and bodily movements
due to excessive tension in the muscles of the body. In some situations,
the person who stutters may find that he or she is temporarily
relieved of his or her symptoms and in other situations they may
return.

Stuttering in adulthood
Stuttering in adulthood (and indeed in childhood) can lead to
a great deal of suffering as it can be accompanied by feelings
of embarrassment and increased levels of frustration and anxiety.
This may lead the sufferer to avoid public
speaking, or indeed any public situation. At worst it may
lead to a withdrawal from life in general. People who stutter
may choose a career in which they feel their vocal uniqueness
may not be noticed. In doing so have already restricted their
potential to flourish in ways that they may have had they not
had this impediment.
